Spotlight: Mr. Lal Gul - Afghan Attorney  E-mail

Afghan attorney and human rights activist Mr. Lal Gul is a founder and the current Chairman of the  Afghanistan Human Rights Organization (AHRO).   AHRO was founded in 1997 " [t]o promote, protect, and defend the human rights of the Afghans through proactive advocacy, grassroots activism, publicity, legal representation and participation and collaboration in the national and international Human Rights communities and the United Nations."   

The AHRO maintains programs around human rights awareness and education, monitoring and investigation, research, training and capacity building.   They produce publications to educate Afghan citizens about their legal rights, and maintain the Human Rights International Networking Center to further link together needy Afghans with legal service providers.  Mr. Gul’s work with AHRO has helped thousands of Afghans who are targets or vulnerable to human rights abuses, including providing free legal aid, child protection and advocacy, as well as an HIV/AIDS Awareness Program. 

Prior to his work on the AHRO, Mr. Gul served as the President of Procurement and Foreign Relations in the Ministry of Mining and Industries. He also worked as the Director of Social Services and Education for Afghan Refugees in Malakand Chateral and the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan.  From 2004-05, Mr. Gul served on the Human Rights and Civil Society Network of Afghanistan, and has been a Counsel Member of the Asian Muslim Action Network for the past four years.  He also currently serves as the Afghan representative to the Asian Resources Foundation.
